Montague Island Environmental Science Excursion
During two days in October a group of students and staff ventured onto the oceans off Narooma hoping to view the migrating Humpback whales. Unfortunately due to rough weather this did not happen, but students did experience sailing on a boat in a 2 metre swell which was a highlight. This was added to by the aroma of hundreds of Australian Fur seals which live on the rocky outcrops of Montague Island. |

Canberra College Students are off to Japan in December!
Our application for the AFS Japan Study Trip (JENESEYS) Program has been finally approved by AFS Japan.
10 students from our Japanese course will accompany Mie Selby, the Japanese teacher, and will leave for Japan on December 4th for two weeks.
The Program is fully funded by the Japanese Government and 600 students from South Asia and Pacific Region
will participate this year. The cost to each student has been only a processing fee, their passport, and some spending money, so the trip for each one is rather like winning a lottery. On arrival our students will be divided into small international groups and will take part in various activities including study visits to Tokyo, Hiroshima and Kyoto, homestay for 1 week, school visit etc.
When we learned about the Program in May, we thought it was too good a chance to miss. After a long and frustrating process of filling out one set of forms after another…all of Mie’s hard work has been worth it!
The Canberra College students are thrilled and excited about the upcoming trip.
“I think this will be a good life experience for all of them.” (M.Selby)
The students who are going to Japan are:
Davis H
Matthew F
Cameron G
Lachlan W
Stephen W
Jerzy B
Kate P
Alexandra H

engageThe artists who participated in this exhibition are students who will be graduating from the Canberra College in 2008. They are finishing Year Twelve and have completed two years of study in Visual Art. They worked collaboratively to produce this exhibition.Canberra College has a strong Visual Art Department with enthusiastic and committed teachers. The top students rank in the higher percentile of the colleges’ UAI. Students’ art works have gained recognition and awards in local and interstate arenas. Art works and artists' books have been selected for exhibition in Headspace at the National Portrait Gallery every year since 2003. Students have been selected as finalists in the Billy Blue Scholarship award. Students have also been selected for the prestigious National Summer School Fellowship at the National Gallery of Australia five times in the last six years. A number of students are applying to study at the Canberra Art School in 2009. This exhibition reflects the journey of this group of young men and women. The later units of study are student negotiated. They have also completed units such as Design, Culture and Identity, Painting and Drawing. Each cohort is different and each cohort expresses their Art in a different manner. This year the focus seems to be Drawing as an Art form. Barbara Jackson |

Our Nation’s Garden Photography CompetitionEarlier in the semester all our Photography students spent a morning at the Australian National Botanic Gardens taking photographs for the 12th Annual Photographic Competition.Over forty students entered photographs in the four different categories: ‘Black and White’, ‘Colour’, ‘People in the Gardens’ and ‘Digital/Photographic Effects’. Our students created some wonderful responses for these categories. The Art Photography class in particular have used some interesting darkroom techniques including solarisation, sepia toner, cyanotype, paint-on developer and texture screens. In past years Canberra College students have done well in the competition and we have been successful again this year. Congratulations go to Samantha H and Millie C who both won prizes; and to Robbie Mc, Candice B, William T, Ella P, Riemke A and Kayla G who gained High Commendations. These students were awarded their prizes and certificates at the exhibition opening on Saturday 18 October. All entries will be on display in the Exhibition Gallery of the Visitor Information Centre at the Botanic Gardens until 2 November. This is the area where last year's photographs were displayed for 2 days, and received a wonderful response from the public. |

New Computers at Canberra CollegeOver the October school holidays Canberra College received 200 new computers from the First Round of the National Secondary School Computer Fund. The National Secondary School Computer Fund (the Fund) is a key component of the Australian Government’s $1.2 billion Digital Education Revolution initiative. The Australian Government is investing $1.1 billion over five years (2008–2012) through the Fund, to provide for new or upgraded information and communications technology (ICT) for secondary schools with students in years 9 to 12. The Minister for Education, announced on 12 June 2008 that 896 secondary schools across Australia would receive funding for 116,820 computers in the first Round of the Fund. Through the Fund, grants of $1,000 per computer have been provided. The objective of Round One funding was to bring those schools with students, in years 9 to 12, with a computer to student ratio of 1:8 or worse to a target ratio of 1:2.
The other project that happened over the holidays is that the Macintosh lab now has full internet access and students in the Mac lab can access their home drives from the Window server without interfering with the security of either of these networks. Lyn Mernagh Network Manager |

MUNAOn the weekend of 15th – 17th August, four of our Year12 students, Emily C, Amy C, Anna C-M and Claire W represented the school at MUNA, the national Model United Nations Assembly. MUNA is a Rotary initiative and our students will be sponsored by Woden Daybreak Rotary Club for a weekend of debate on topics of international concern such as world peace, environmental issues and human rights abuses. Emily and Claire represented Cuba and Amy and Anna represented Lebanon. Sessions were held on Saturday and Sunday at Old Parliament House and were open to the public. The level of debate was high and the wearing of national dress helped participants develop an awareness of the working of the UN and an understanding of the international positions of other countries. 34 schools from the eastern seaboard were represented but we were the only ACT school to receive an award. Congratulations to Claire and Emily for their efforts on Cuba’s behalf in this very worthwhile Program and thanks to Rotary for the opportunity. |

She finished the show with 12 National Championships and 6 Res National Championships. They were from many different disciplines (English, western, dressage, jumping etc) and included NATIONAL CHAMPION BRIDLE-LESS Western Pleasure. She was awarded High Point Youth of the Show and won a big silver buckle - The Holy Grail of the Western Horse World. Exciting Music News !!
Huge and very proud congratulations go to two of our music students!
Hannah P and Sam C have been heard this week on Triple J. They have entered unearthed and their song has been chosen as the unearthed song of the week as this goes to print!. They received a lot of praise from the DJ and the song is available off the website as a free download. The DJ’s on JJJ said they were two 17 year olds from Canberra and gave them a big plug. !! ☺
Hannah P and Sam C (a.k.a “Hannah and Sam”) in Year 12 were recently selected as the “Triple J Unearthed Spotlight Artists of the Week”. Their original song “Who’s Bitten You” was chosen for rotation on national radio!!
Year 12 Music Industry Promotion student Ella P interviewed the duo:
H: Well, our names are really cute together!
S: And they're really average too - like, heaps of duos are called Hannah and Sam.
2. When did you start playing and writing together?
H: At school, last year;
S: In fact, in this very room!
H: But we've only really been together as a band for about 2 months now.
3. How long has your stuff been up on Triple J Unearthed?
H: Around 2-3 weeks now.
4. How many of your songs are on rotation on Triple J at the moment?
H: Just Who's Bitten You.
S: Trouble On An Iceburg will get rotation too if they like it at Triple J.
5. What's Who's Bitten You actually about?
H: It's about my brother, well, the brother-sister relationship. It's fairly vague - and it's not about what happens, more about, what I wish would happen.
S: It's a good little song to waltz to! It was basically written on the spot.
H: Yeah, I wrote it in one night, and we spent around 3 weeks perfecting it.
6. Who are your influences in terms of music, or otherwise?
H: well, in terms of writing, I'd say Laura Veirs, Regina Spektor (on Sam's behalf) and my sister, unofficially.
7. What are your long term goals - do you intend to follow music as a career?
H: Well, this year, we basically just want our album release to be successful.
S: We're trying to put an album together, by November, but we've only got 4 songs recorded, only one of which is edited...We record at my brother's house.
H: I think this will be more of a side thing, I don't want to rely on it as income, like, I don't want it to turn into, "I have to write another song so I can eat tomorrow!!"
