Mawson Primary Buddy System

Chinese Buddy Program with Mawson Primary School

The College is currently discussing the formation of a buddy program with Chinese language students at Mawson Primary School. In this program students will get the opportunity to practise Mandarin with our Chinese International students each semester. As part of a reciprocal arrangement this will give our overseas students an opportunity to know more about the Australian education system and improve their listening and speaking skills in English. It is hoped the program will also help build a cluster of schools in the district offering Mandarin. So far 11 International students have applied to be part of the program and they are all busy planning their work with students from the primary sector.

Chinese Buddy Program with Mawson Primary School

Our discussions about this valuable program, mooted at the beginning of the year, have borne fruit and we are very happy to report that our first group of International students have visited Mawson Primary School to work with Chinese language students. Edward G,  Michelle L, TT R and Veronica Z will partake in a 10 week program which has a range of reciprocal benefits. While the advantages for our local primary students in being able to practise Mandarin with young native speakers are obvious,  our international students are able to practise  their English too and most importantly with young children who, in their perception, are  a less critical audience, helping them to laugh at their mistakes and plough on regardless in the interests of fun communication!!!  Participating students found the first visit a rewarding and fun experience and look forward to developing their relationships.

On Friday 30 May, five of the Canberra College’s best mathematicians participated in the Maths Day at the Australian National University where there were thirty two teams from the ACT and surrounding NSW competing.  Representing the college were Ben R. (captain), Roy E, Rachel H, Andrew K and Don M.

The competition consisted of presenting the solution to a complex problem in a poster format and then participating in four sets of team activities on the 30 May.  The Group Contest was first. It comprised ten problems, followed by the Swiss where they solved head to head quizzes between pairs of teams. Then the Cross contest where half the team got the “across” clues and the other half got the “down” clues and lastly the Relay which consisted of twenty questions.

Congratulations to our team who by gaining first place achieved a milestone for the Canberra College.  We are all very proud of the team – they were 28 points ahead of the second placed school.  It is a wonderful result.

Emergence of Humankind Excursion

On Thursday the 22nd of May, students from the Emergence of Humankind class attended an excursion at ANU. The first section of the afternoon had all students making stone tools for the first time. This was accompanied by a two hour workshop from Dr Peter Hiscock, Reader in Archaeology at ANU. Students handled stone tools made by Neanderthals over 350,000 years ago and looked at the first colonisation into Australia and some stone tool technologies from the last 50,000 years.

Students were then given a tour of the classics Museum by Dr Peter Londey and had the opportunity to get course advice on Ancient History courses on offer at ANU. Lastly, students stayed on for the final lecture in the Archaeology course given by Dr Peter Hiscock on Scientific Archaeology. Students really enjoyed the experience and the lecture and both of our guides on the day complimented the students on their interest and maturity whilst at ANU. This has led to Dr. Hiscock agreeing to attend the college for a guest lecture in July on Indiana Jones and the media portrayal of historians and archaeologists.

Students argue at Moot Court Competition!

Four Canberra College students are representing the college in the Bond Uni. Regional Moot Court Competition this week. ( Caitlin S, Ella P, Stephanie C and Peter K ) The students have been working very hard on preparing to deliver both a written and oral appeal to a decision of a lower court that decided that a high school is not responsible for the retaliation of a victim against his bully.  They will argue that the breakdown of legal responsibility largely, if not entirely, remains with the school because it had prior knowledge both of the bullying and the likelihood that the victim would snap and commit the assault, but that it did little, if anything, to attempt to avoid either situation.

Adelaide Tour – Drama

Ian Walker, Alanna Maclean and the Drama Production students recently attended the Adelaide Fringe Festival to perform “A Place for Poppy”. Performances at the Adelaide festival have become an annual event for current and previous Drama students. It is a fantastic festival to showcase the quality of work produced by Canberra College students as well as an opportunity to attend up to 11 theatre performances. This year students attended the Adelaide Festival/Fringe/Writers’ Week and the WOMADelaide Writers Festival.

Canberra College Carnival

The Canberra College Carnival was held on Wednesday February 20. This day provides an opportunity for students to mix with staff and other students in an informal and engaging way. All students attended 3 workshops and engaged in activities on offer during the lunch break.

All faculty areas offered workshops including: dance and art workshops, maths games, chess, spelling horse races, table tennis round robin and becoming a barrista in an hour! All these sessions were filled to capacity and students clearly enjoyed the broad range of activities on offer.

At lunchtime students listened to local band Casual Projects, romped on the Jumping Castle, engaged in tug o’war bouts on the oval, queued up for the sausage sizzle or visited the shopfronts including SIPS (Students to Industry), the RSPCA and Woden Youth Centre.
