Garran School Board
One of the strengths of the ACT education system is that parents, teachers and the community participate in school decision making through the School Board. The Board provides a formal mechanism for parents, staff and students to have their views taken into account when decisions are made.
Board Members
The School Board comprises;
- the Principal (Tanya Nelipa)
- 2 teacher representatives
- 3 parent representatives, and
- 1 community representative.
Board elections are held once a year to fill vacant positions. Each position is held for 2 years duration.
Interested parents can nominate to serve on the Board. If there are more nominations than available positions an election takes place under a process established by the Department. The teacher representatives are elected by the staff. The community representative is nominated by the Department.
Role
The function of the board is to work with the school executive to determine policy settings and up-grades to the school. This includes establishing educational resources, educational policy, finance report (school budget) and the communication to the broad school community on matters which have arisen. An example of recent policy considered is the School Development Plan.
The board meets approximately twice a term and all meetings are open.
Communication
This is a very important part of the role of the School Board. Minutes from board meetings are available at the school office and are reported upon in the Garran Gazette. There are also notes from the Board parent representatives in the Gazette. A Board parent representative will, where possible, be in attendance at the school P & C meetings.
