ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) (T and A)A major and minor are offered in this course, which is designed for students from non-English speaking backgrounds who need assistance in developing skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in English. Units incorporate basic English skills and are suited to students who have recently arrived, are overseas students or students who need English language support in their other subjects. Term b units are available for late entry into or early exit from the course. Introductory Research and Writing Skills Basic research techniques, familiarisation with the library and IT, and development of sentence, paragraph and essay construction are covered in this unit. (1 unit) Exploring Literacy and Formal Texts Students examine short texts such as stories, poems, novel extracts. Language is studied through Australian film, literature and popular culture. Report writing and referencing skills are also developed. (1 unit) Research Skills, Literature and Film This unit develops skills in oral communication and further develops research, analysis, synthesis, and referencing skills. Writing for a range of purposes and audiences is practised. Films and texts are used as stimulus for writing. (1 unit) Issues in Literature and Culture Through the study of a range of cultures students develop an understanding of the cultural tradition of multicultural Australia. The argumentative and expository essay is further developed, and students practice oral skills. (1 unit) |
