VISUAL ARTS

The courses offered are:



ART AND DESIGN (T/A)

This course provides the opportunity for creative endeavour and personal expression providing a focus on contemporary society. The influences on contemporary art are studied, including the appreciation of Western and Asian art.

Knowledge obtained in the T course will be useful for students wishing to work or study in the fine arts, crafts or design fields. Students will develop a portfolio of work which can be presented when applying for a variety of positions or for entrance into tertiary institutions.

The A course is intended for students who want to study art in a mainly practical way.

Students complete a major practical project each term.

Art 1
This unit is an introduction to the history of art, elements and principles of design, drawing and painting using different media, portraiture and OH&S issues. (.5 & 1 unit)

Art 2
Practical printmaking and sculpture, developing from a foundation of practical and drawing skills, studio work based on traditions of both early and contemporary cultures are areas of study. (1 unit)

Art 3
Drawing as a way of exploring ideas, life drawing, practical expression in sculpture, installation and public art, study of contemporary art practice and analysing and interpreting environments are part of this unit. (1 unit)

Art 4
Major work of a student’s choice that reflects an understanding of contemporary issues, studio work that is self-directed towards an exhibition and portfolio preparation are studied. (1 unit)



MULTIMEDIA (T/V or A/V)

Through the study of Multimedia, students gain skills as producers of media products. There is a strong emphasis on practical projects that allow students to develop communication skills. The course allows students to develop their own skills to evaluate various media products.

Multimedia encourages students to question society's values including issues of gender, race, the world of work and the environment. The facilities at Copland College are industry standard. Media students have the opportunity to work with high quality computers and software which allow them to produce projects in digital video and audio, multimedia and print, as well as 2D and 3D animation.

These projects can be further enhanced by the use of digital still and video cameras as well as analogue cameras.

Students may complete units in Media to complete the IB Curriculum for Group 6: Visual Arts- Film Study.

Students may achieve one of the following course packages:

  • a T package and Statement of Attainment or a Certificate in Multimedia
  • an A package and a Statement of Attainment

It is highly recommended that all students complete the unit Language of the Media.

One standard specified unit of Multimedia units may be counted as part of an English major or major/minor. Up to two standard units may be included for a double major in English.

Animation
This unit examines the nature of, and concepts related to, traditional and computer generated animation. (1 unit)

Journalism
This unit explores a range of electronic and written journalism. Students produce a range of reports based on their own research and interviews. This unit may be counted as part of an English major. (1 unit)

Language of the Media
The introduction of the general modes of enquiry used in the analysis of all Media products is the focus of this unit. This unit may be counted as part of an English major. (1 unit)

Multimedia
The concept of multimedia, multimedia processes, production techniques and distribution formats are studied. Students create an interactive project in the second half of this unit. (1 unit)

Popular Culture
An examination of culture, ideology, systems of representation and the role of the media in a cultural context is the focus of this unit. This unit may be counted as part of an English major. (1unit)

Production: Process to Product
This is self directed unit which allows students to apply their understanding of media concepts to the production of a significant project for a real client. (1 unit)

Television
This unit involves the study and analysis of both fiction and nonfiction television. This unit may be counted as part of an English major. (1 unit)

Multimedia and the Web
Students explore new and developing media technologies related to multimedia and the web. Students have the opportunity to develop their production skills by planning and producing web related multimedia products and a web site. (1 unit)

The Print Media
This unit involves the analysis of the changing field of print media in order to identify how the key elements of media language create meaning. This unit may be counted as part of an English major. (1 unit)

World Cinema
The study of cinema from its beginnings to the present day with an emphasis on cinema from a range of countries is the focus of the unit This unit may be counted as part of an English major. (1 unit)

Digital Sound
A focus on listening skills and analysis of the nature of sound through class and project work forms the core area of study in this unit. (1 unit)



PHOTOGRAPHY (T/A)

The T and A courses are closely related; content and teaching are usually common for both levels. However, students studying at a tertiary accredited level will examine all aspects of the subject at greater depth with an added emphasis on theory.

International Baccalaureate
IB students undertaking IB Visual Arts (Photography) will be required to study Photography T1, Photography T2, Photography T3 and Photography T4. Students also complete twelve art works over the two year period, a visual diary and a foreign culture investigation.

Photography and Digital Imaging (T)

The course provides students with the necessary technical, compositional and aesthetic understanding to produce photographs of merit. It gives students the opportunity to develop their creativity in a medium that is both popular and accessible. Students’ folios of work will help them gain places in related tertiary courses.

Photography T 1
This unit provides knowledge of black and white photography. Safe use of photographic materials and the use of simple cameras provide the introduction for the unit. The use of SLR cameras is taught producing consistently well exposed negatives and prints. Introduction of pictorial composition and photographic history are included. (1 unit)

Photography T 2
This unit provides continued skill development in black and white photography, including the use of studio lighting. Practical work includes photographic manipulation, landscape and night photography. Introduction of photographic criticism and aesthetics are part of the unit. (1 unit)

Photography T 3
The following topics are studied in this: Photography in context of its function; Artificial lighting; The study of colour materials and the theory and effective use of colour in composition; Processing and printing colour material. Work includes toning, hand colouring and portfolio preparation. Photography as fine art is examined. (1 unit)

Photography T 4
Photography as Art is the focus of the unit. Students undertake an in-depth study of the principles of making fine art prints and installations. Colour, black and white, computer generated images and alternative processes are investigated. Students prepare portfolios of their work to a high standard. (1 unit)

Digital Photography (T/A) 1
Adobe Photoshop forms the basis of the work in scanning images determining formats and scan resolution; planning and process in image combination and manipulation; working in colour, colour correction; using a digital camera. Digital photography in context is also included. (1 unit)

Digital Photography (T/A) 2
This unit develops skills in the use of Photoshop, including filters, channels and masks. Students study the work of photographers who use photomontage and digital montage, and work at a complex level in producing manipulated images. The unit includes production of a portfolio of digital images. (1 unit)



PHOTOGRAPHY AND DIGITAL IMAGING (A)

Photography A 1
This unit is an introduction to the safe use of photographic materials; camera types; characteristics of black and white film; Aspects of darkroom procedures print processing; Composition and design; Photographic history and the development of photography. (1 unit)

Photography A 2
Elements of study in this unit are: compositional qualities of well known photographers' work; Journalism and landscape photography; Using a high quality camera system and various lenses; Photographic manipulation and the use of composition and design to make photographs of quality. (1 unit)

Photography A 3
Students develop skills in communicating with photography by working on a study, such as landscape panoramas, applying advanced darkroom techniques, and producing a report on photographic applications. It is an introduction to colour, and students produce a portfolio of prints. (1 unit)

Photography A 4
This unit involves black and white, colour and digital photography. Photography as art, and artistic techniques used to manipulate the image are studied. The making of large size photographs and producing a portfolio of work are part of the unit. (1 unit)
