Studies of society and environment

LEARNING CONTEXT
Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) is a core subject at Melba High School, occupying five classroom periods per week of approximately 40 minutes each at all year levels.
Year 7 and 8
During years 7 and 8 there are generally two Fast Paced classes and three mainstream groups including a smaller group with focus on Learning Assistance. Following enrolment, movement between these groups is determined by performance and signalled potential.
Year 9 and 10
In years 9 and 10 there are usually two Level 1 classes, mainstream classes and a special needs class determined by student performance in the preceding year and staff professional judgment. Decisions on whether to structure a discrete Level 3 group in these years is taken annually dependent on class dynamics and perceived need. In Years 9 and 10 there is a deliberate policy to maximise class sizes and focus on extension of student interests,  abilities and development of academic skills for tertiary level. Level 2 classes are smaller and provide a more supportive climate for lower ability groupings.
In Semester II Year 9 and 10 SOSE classes are organised in elective groupings. Students are given the opportunity to choose from Geography, Consumer Education and Tourism in Year 9 and in Year 10 Business and Enterprise, Asian and American History, Vocational Education and Issues of Today

RATIONALE
Studies of Society and Environment is an essential part of a balanced education where all students learn about factors which shape their individual identity and of the society in which they live.
SOSE expands students' knowledge and understanding of their own society, other societies, local and global environments and the relationships between environments and societies. It develops knowledge about Australia, the diversity of its people, its cultural and natural environmental heritage, its political, economic and legal systems and its place in the world.
Students cover significant issues such as ethics, social justice and economically sustainable development. They are actively involved in:
  • Gaining knowledge and skills
  • Clarifying and articulating their attitudes, values and beliefs about themselves, others, their place in society and the environment
  • Making decisions and choices.
Studies of Society and Environment at Melba High School challenges students to make creative responses both as individuals and with others, to important issues. Students are equipped to seek change and helped to find the confidence to manage the future. The learning area focuses on the need to live in peace and harmony in our independent and interconnected world of natural and social systems.
