Computer Fundamentals
Prerequisites: There are no formal prerequisites for this unit.
Introduction: This Year 8 introductory computing unit gives students an opportunity to extend upon multimedia skills learned in Year 7 as well as develop new skills in the use of common office applications.
Basic Content and Activities
Students will focus on building familiarity with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, desktop publishing and communication (email) applications. Keyboarding skills and network familiarisation will also form an integral part of this unit.

Year 9/10 Electives
Web page design and digital photo editing
Prerequisites: There are no formal prerequisites for this unit.
Duration of Course: One semester.
Introduction
The Internet has become a major part of modern life that is used for research, recreation and communication. This course is designed for students who are interested in learning about World Wide Web page design and development for the Internet and manipulation of digital images.
Basic Content and Activities
Through participation in this unit students will have the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in:
- Web page design principles,
- Critical evaluation of web pages,
- Web page creation using HTML programming and a web editor,
- Effective use of e-mail,
- Digital camera use, and
- Altering digital images.
Students undertaking this course will also be assessed against the following Certificate 1 in IT competencies:
- Send and receive information over the Internet,
- Using browsers and email, and
- Operate a personal computer.
Assessment
Assessment will be based on:
- Practical work,
- Demonstration of ICT competence,
- Tests/assignments,
- Participation in class activities, and
- Behaviour and attitude.

Computer Networking and Hardware
Prerequisites: There are no formal prerequisites for this unit.
Duration of Course: One semester.
Introduction
Although there are no prerequisites for this unit, it would be an advantage for students to have some familiarity with computers. This is an advanced unit designed for students who wish to learn about computer networking design, protocols and implementation and who are interested in learning about computer components hardware.
Basic Content and Activities
Through participation in this unit students will have the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in:
- LAN (Local Area Network) and WAN (Wide Area Network) components and configurations
- LAN planning and design
- The Internet
- Data transfer across networks
- Common network protocols
- Building a small network (building and configuring computers, network cabling)
- Computer components and their functions.

- Practical work,
- Tests/assignments, and
- Behaviour and attitude.

Robotics and programming languages
Prerequisites: There are no formal prerequisites for this unit.
Duration of Course: One semester.
Introduction
This unit is designed for students who wish to use computers to gain a fundamental understanding of programming for robots. Students also research a range of operating systems and higher order programming languages. Students wishing to study Programming languages would find this unit advantageous.
Basic Content and Activities
Through participation in this unit students will have the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in:
- Robot programming commands,
- Program planning and design,
- Problem solving using computers, and
- Higher level programming languages.

Computer Applications
Prerequisites: There are no formal prerequisites for this unit.
Duration of Course: One semester.
Introduction
This unit is designed for students who wish to develop an understanding of using computers for study and/or business purposes. Keyboarding, Microsoft Word, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint and Excel will be studied. Students will participate in numerous activities that can count towards their Information and Communication Technologies Competencies (ICTC) Certificate.
Basic Content and Activities
Through participation in this unit students will have the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in:
- Document formatting
- Word processing basics
- Creating tables, forms, queries graphs and reports
- Inputting data into worksheets
- Performing calculations using simple formulae
- Advanced formatting in Microsoft Publisher
- Creating a variety of document types using Publisher
- Designing and creating slides
Students undertaking this course will also be assessed against the following Certificate 1 in IT competencies:
- Operate a personal computer
- Operate a word processing package
- Operate a spreadsheet application
- Operate a database application
