Workshop 2

Prerequisites: There are no formal prerequisites for this course.

Duration of Course: One semester

Introduction

This is a practical subject in which students make projects with basic materials, tools and machinery, while observing strict safety procedures.

Content and Activities

The semester is divided into 2 terms in which both wood and metal projects are completed. Projects completed in past years include a letter and key rack, a small sheet metal utility box, a wall sconce (for 2 candles), a clock, photo frame, puzzle, a wooden vehicle, a door plaque, a coal scoop, a letterbox, a bird feeder and a screwdriver.

Assessment

Practical work, workshop effort, and the completion of a design folio are used as the basis for final grades. Practical work will be marked on the quantity and quality of work produced in any given module.

Costs

Although the school levy provides for most consumable materials, students are expected to provide monies to cover wasted and additional materials.

Metal workshop 3 & 4

These courses provides students with the opportunity to discover the skills used in four or more modules of metalwork through the completion of projects in sheet metalwork, metal fabrication and welding, metal machining, and wrought iron work.

Prerequisites: Nil

Duration of Courses: One semester

Modules and Projects

Students who elect this subject in years 9 or 10 can follow a prescribed course and complete projects in all modules during the course of the two years. Alternatively, students may select one or more modules of interest and will select projects of their choice from a range of projects with various degrees of difficulty. They may specialize in one area of work all semester provided this does not hinder the achievements of their peers.

Possible projects and modules

  •
  • Sheetmetal work: eg cantilevered toolbox, coal scoop, self-designed project,
  •
  • Metal fabrication and welding:  eg quick-action clamp, welding, trolley,
  •
  • Metal machining: eg weather vane, model cannon, tack hammer, screwdriver, or
  •
  • Wrought iron work: eg planters, lighting, furniture, hangers and brackets, kitchenware.

Practical work, workshop effort, and the completion of a design folio are used as the basis for final grades. Practical work will be marked on the quantity and quality of work produced in any given module.

Costs

Although the school levy provides for some consumable materials, students are expected to provide extra monies for materials specific to their choice of design alternatives.

Machinery

Students will always have the opportunity to use any machine to reduce the time taken to finish a product provided the ACT Department of Education and training has approved this machine for student use, appropriate safety tests are completed each year, and the student has continually demonstrated safe and responsible working habits.
