Special Programs that enrich Year 7 - 10 learning.
The Year 7 to 10 Junior Campus offers a diverse range of enrichment opportunities to complement the more formal curriculum.
SOSE ELECTIVES
In semester 2 in Year 9 and 10 in Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) students choose from a variety of electives including Consumer Education, Geography, Tourism, Vocational Education, American and/or Asian History, Business Studies and Enterprise and Issues of Today. Students enjoy the opportunity to study areas of particular interest in greater depth. Further opportunities for work experience are provided for students who choose Vocational Education in Year 10 and as well they visit our local Colleges and learn about the many vocational courses they can study in Year 11 and 12.
STUDENT WELFARE
Student welfare processes at Melba are designed to provide a supportive environment for students so that they may enjoy their time here learning about their subjects, and how to get on with one another in our community. We support our students by providing a large range of services that especially help them deal with and solve problems. Even our disciplinary actions are aimed at supporting students learn from their mistakes and improve their behaviour. For more explicit information about policies and practices related to student welfare, go to the "Policies and Practices" page of this website.
WORK EXPERIENCE
All year 10 students have the opportunity to do a week of work experience in a wide variety of placements in the ACT and surrounding regions. Students are prepared for this involvement in the world of work through lessons in their SOSE (Studies of Society and Environment) classes. This activity is highly valued by the students and their teachers and provides many opportunities for personal development, as well as the chance to learn about possible work and career choices.
Level One students are asked to arrange their own placemments as the availability of placements in professional fields is extremely limited for Year 10 students. This process also gives these students a sense of ownership and responsibility which is so important in the work environment.
Level Two students and those with special needs or doing vocational training will also be encouraged to arranged placements for themselves. They may receive help with funding and organisation from the Work Experience Organiser.
UNIVERSITY OF NSW COMPETITIONS
Students in all years are encouraged to participate in the Mathematics, Science, English and Computing Competitions run annually by the University of NSW.
