DANCE
This one semester elective unit will provide an introduction to a variety of dance styles and techniques. Some of the dance styles you could learn are: funk, hip hop, contemporary, various cultural dances, and choreography techniques. There will also be a theoretical and safe dance component that will look at the importance of warming up, cooling down, stretching and fuelling the body for performance. Students will also have opportunities to create costumes for performances.
Through participation in a range of exercise and activities, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of movement, dance and performance. Through the exploration of different styles of dance, students will gain an understanding of the role dance plays in societies throughout the world. Students will have the opportunity to create movement sequences and perform in both small and large groups in a variety of settings.
This is a fairly new elective opportunity at Melba High School and for the two previous semesters when it has run the following dance styles were studied: Hip Hop, belly dance, African and Afro Funk, with a tasting of Bollywood and Contempory.
Students also have opportunities to participate in dance through extra-curricular activities such as the annual Dance Festival, and special interest groups such as the group of boys currently learning hip hop at the Belconnen Youth Centre one afternoon a week.
