CAP Program

Palmerston operates self-contained classes for students identified as academically gifted.  Our CAP classes cater for students from years 1-6.

Features of the CAP program

  • Fast-paced
  • Lateral extension
  • Strong focus on problem-solving, inquiry and thinking skills
  • Content is largely negotiated /self-directed with opportunities for self-interest projects
  • Some content areas are compulsory but may require minimal or speedy coverage to ensure base knowledge before extension opportunities are available  eg maths facts, spelling and writing facts/skills
  • Modes of presentation may be negotiated eg computer / written / oral
  • Participation in Maquarie Bank Problem Solving Program, Jason Project and external competitions

CAP students are identified in accordance with the criteria stated in the School's G& T Policy.  In offering placements, the G&T Committee considers students performance on standardised ability tests, psychometric assessments, and achievement reference data.

MUSIC PROGRAM

Students participate in one classroom music lesson each week with the school’s specialist music teacher.  Musically gifted students are identified and encouraged to develop their talents through instrumental and vocal performance.  Opportunities are provided for students to perform individually and with others.  The school has a strong choral tradition and musically gifted students are encouraged to participate in the school’s choirs and recorder groups.  In 2007, the school's Welsh Choir won first place in the Welsh songs section of the Australian National Eisteddfod.  A number of leadership opportunities exist for students with outstanding ability within the choirs and recorder groups.
