Music

Music at Palmerston District Primary School is based on the Kadaly philosophy of Music Education. The program is singing-based. Children are taught the elements of music through traditional children's songs and games, folk songs, rounds, rhymes, poems and movement. They have opportunities for creating music using classroom percussion instruments.  All children at Palmerston Primary are encouraged to participate to the best of their abilities.

Children in each year level in the school take part in one specialist music lesson each week.  In 2007, this also included some children from the pre-school.

A strong choral tradition exists at Palmerston. In 2007 over one hundred children have chosen to take part in a choir. Currently, their are three choirs for children in years 3 to 6. The school's Welsh choir won the 12 years and under Welsh songs section in the 2007 Australian National Eisteddfod.  The school actively encourages boys to participate in choir and in the latter part of 2007 a senior boys' choir was formed.

The school also offers children the opportunity to play in recorder groups at lunchtime.  In 2007 there are three groups - beginner, advanced and treble.

The choirs and recorder groups regularly perform in public. The choirs have performed at Government House, the ACT Legislative Assembly, local shopping centres and aged care facilities. Parents and community volunteers assist with accompanying and coaching the choirs.

Palmerston is committed to ensuring that students experience quality live performances.  In 2007, the school participated in the Musica Viva in Schools program.  As part of this program, all students in school attended a performance by the percussion ensemble B'tutta.

Graduating students are eligable to be considered for the John Perrin Memorial Award for Outstanding Excellence in Music, an award that recognises ability, achievement and participation in music at Palmerston.
